The IMF has revealed El Salvador isn\u2019t buying more bitcoin (BTC) despite claims from its BTC office, but rather topping up its holdings with BTC from various other government wallets.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s according<\/a> to a footnote in the IMF\u2019s review of the Extended Fund Facility (EFF) that states, \u201cIncreases in Bitcoin holdings in the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve Fund reflect the consolidation of Bitcoin across various government-owned wallets.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The IMF\u2019s \u201cExtended Fund Facility\u201d gave El Salvador a $1.4 billion loan and was approved<\/a> last February. Loan conditions stipulated that El Salvador\u2019s government, run by the tyrannical<\/a> bitcoin maximalist Nayib Bukele, should wind down its BTC buying operations.\u00a0<\/p>\n

One of El Salvador\u2019s most recent BTC buying claims was made approximately two weeks ago.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

However, El Salvador\u2019s National Bitcoin Office has repeatedly<\/a> claimed it has been buying BTC for several months, going against the IMF\u2019s BTC criteria. Nayib Bukele has also been reposting<\/a> reports from the Bitcoin office that brag about the growing price of the country\u2019s BTC holdings.\u00a0<\/p>\n

However, the IMF\u2019s report states, \u201cThe overall stock of Bitcoin held by the public sector has remained unchanged since program approval.\u201d <\/p>\n

It\u2019s not the first time the government of El Salvador hasn\u2019t been entirely honest about its bitcoin reporting after a bitcoin tracker Nayib Bukele used to proclaim his holdings were back in the \u201cblack\u201d was found<\/a> to be double-counting the government\u2019s bitcoin purchases. <\/p>\n

IMF wants El Salvador\u2019s public Chivo bitcoin wallet shut by July 31<\/h2>\n

The report also found \u201cminor and short-lived\u201d instances after the program\u2019s approval where BTC holdings of Chivo users decreased while Chivo didn\u2019t sell the corresponding amount of BTC. This has since been addressed.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It added that the goal to end public participation in the Chivo wallet by the end of July remains unchanged.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Despite all this, the report was overall positive and noted that \u201dProgram performance has been solid, with the economy continuing to expand as macroeconomic imbalances are being addressed.\u201d<\/p>\n

As such, it ordered the immediate disbursement of SDR 86.16 million, roughly $118 million, as part of the loan program. A total of $231 million has been distributed so far.\u00a0<\/p>\n
