While still far below the <a href=\"https:\/\/news.crunchbase.com\/business\/global-vc-funding-unicorns-2021-monthly-recap\/\">frothy peaks of 2021<\/a>, H1 2025 marks the strongest half-year for venture investment globally since the first six months of 2022, signaling tentative recovery in the private markets.<\/p>\n<p>The gains we saw weren\u2019t evenly distributed, however. <a href=\"https:\/\/news.crunchbase.com\/venture\/na-funding-q2-2025-ai-ipo-ma-data\/\">North America logged the largest surge<\/a>, led by blockbuster AI deals. In Europe, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.crunchbase.com\/venture\/europe-funding-q2-2025-ai-ma-seed-data\/\">Germany surpassed the U.K.<\/a> as the top venture market for the first time in more than a decade, and in Latin America, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.crunchbase.com\/venture\/mexico-leads-latam-funding-q2-2025-ai-fintech-data\/\">Mexico topped Brazil<\/a> for the first time since 2012.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re also seeing <a href=\"https:\/\/news.crunchbase.com\/ma\/ai-enterprise-startup-ma-higher-h1-2025-data\/\">sustained momentum in startup M&amp;A activity<\/a>, with acquisitions of venture-backed companies crossing $100 billion in the first half of 2025 \u2014 a 155% jump year over year \u2014 per Crunchbase data.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Let\u2019s take a closer look, with eight charts from Crunchbase News\u2019 Q2 venture reports that illustrate the major startup and VC trends midway through 2025.<\/p>\n<h2>M&amp;A more than doubles as appetite grows for big deals<\/h2>\n<p>Crunchbase tracked <a href=\"https:\/\/news.crunchbase.com\/ma\/ai-enterprise-startup-ma-higher-h1-2025-data\/\">918 announced global startup acquisitions in H1 2025<\/a>, a 13% increase in deal count compared to the first half of 2024.<\/p>\n<p>By dollar volume, the increase was substantial, with just over $100 billion worth of disclosed-price startup purchases in the first half of 2025 \u2014 a staggering 155% increase YoY \u2014 as companies showed a willingness to write big checks for strategic buys, especially in the AI infrastructure and cybersecurity categories.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Among the blockbuster deals in the first half of the year were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crunchbase.com\/organization\/google\">Google<\/a>\u2019s planned $32 billion <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crunchbase.com\/organization\/wiz-inc\">Wiz<\/a> purchase \u2014\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.crunchbase.com\/ma\/google-bid-wiz-klarna-ipo-ai-big-exits\/\">slated to be the largest startup acquisition on record<\/a> \u2014 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crunchbase.com\/organization\/openai\">OpenAI<\/a>\u2019s $6.5 billion purchase of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crunchbase.com\/person\/jony-ive\">Jony Ive<\/a>\u2019s AI device startup <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crunchbase.com\/organization\/io-963b\">Io<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Other top deals in H1 included <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crunchbase.com\/organization\/moveworks\">Moveworks<\/a>\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/news.crunchbase.com\/ma\/servicenow-acquiring-moveworks-ai-unicorn-exit-lightspeed\/\">$2.85 billion acquisition<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crunchbase.com\/organization\/service-now-com\">ServiceNow<\/a>; accounts payable platform <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crunchbase.com\/organization\/melio-0bc5#overview\">Melio<\/a>\u2019s $2.5 billion sale to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crunchbase.com\/organization\/xero\">Xero<\/a>; and electronic health record software provider <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crunchbase.com\/organization\/modernizing-medicine\">Modernizing Medicine<\/a>\u2019s majority stake sale to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crunchbase.com\/organization\/clearlake-capital-group\">Clearlake Capital Group<\/a> at a reported $5.3 billion valuation.<\/p>\n<h2>North America claims indisputable lead, fueled by AI<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/news.crunchbase.com\/venture\/na-funding-q2-2025-ai-ipo-ma-data\/\">North America continues to be the indisputable leader in startup funding<\/a>, accounting for an astonishing 70% of global funding in H1.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, investors poured $145 billion into seed through growth-stage rounds for U.S. and Canadian companies in the first six months of the year, per Crunchbase data. That\u2019s a 43% gain year over year, and the highest half-year total in three years.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. AI sector once again led the way, with nearly $90 billion of the region\u2019s first-half total going to startups working on artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.crunchbase.com\/organization\/facebook\">Meta<\/a>\u2019s $14.3 billion June investment in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crunchbase.com\/organization\/scale-2\">Scale AI<\/a> led as the largest funding deal in Q2. Other big deals included a <a href=\"https:\/\/news.crunchbase.com\/venture\/defense-tech-unicorn-anduril-doubles-valuation\/\">$2.5 billion Series G<\/a> for defense tech unicorn <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crunchbase.com\/organization\/anduril-industries\">Anduril Industries<\/a>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/news.crunchbase.com\/business\/biggest-rounds-april-2025-safe-superintelligence-plaid\/\">$2 billion financing<\/a> for GenAI startup <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crunchbase.com\/organization\/safe-superintelligence\">Safe Superintelligence<\/a>, and a <a href=\"https:\/\/news.crunchbase.com\/ai\/anysphere-cursor-venture-funding-thrive\/\">$900 million Series C<\/a> for AI coding company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crunchbase.com\/organization\/anysphere#overview\">Anysphere<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>IPO optimism also lifted spirits, with debuts by fintech companies <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crunchbase.com\/organization\/circle-2\">Circle<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crunchbase.com\/organization\/chime-2\">Chime<\/a> seen as bellwethers for a potentially reawakening exit market.<\/p>\n<h2>Asia and China continue slump despite cyber and AI bright spots<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/news.crunchbase.com\/venture\/asia-startup-funding-slide-h1-2025-ai-cyber-data\/\">Investment in Asia-based startups hit a multiyear low in H1 2025<\/a>, offset slightly by a bump in Q2, Crunchbase data shows.<\/p>\n<p>China posted the region\u2019s largest funding decline last quarter, with just $5.1 billion in reported funding. The lackluster quarter comes amid an extended period of declining startup investment in the country, driven by factors including a paucity of IPO and M&amp;A exits.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, venture funding to Asia-based startups totaled $26.2 billion in H1 \u2014 down about a third year over year.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Country-by-country performance was mixed: India held steady quarter to quarter, while Israel hit a two-year quarterly high.<\/p>\n<p>Across Asia, late-stage rounds ticked up slightly in Q2 on a sequential basis, but were down more than 26% year over year. Early-stage, which has held steady for the past several quarters, remained flat in Q2.<\/p>\n<h2>Europe sees steady funding amid lead country shuffle<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/news.crunchbase.com\/venture\/europe-funding-q2-2025-ai-ma-seed-data\/\">Funding to Europe startups plateaued quarter over quarter in Q2<\/a> and fell 24% from the peak second quarter in 2024, Crunchbase data shows.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Notably, Europe\u2019s late-stage funding lagged and pulled the continent\u2019s share of global venture funding from 19% in the first half of 2024 to just 13% in the first six months of this year.<\/p>\n<p>Still, large deals in Q2 went to companies across a handful of sectors, led by a $1.25 billion round to Turkey-based mobile game developer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crunchbase.com\/organization\/dream-games\">Dream Games<\/a>, with other bigger rounds in industries as varied as defense, quantum computing, energy, robotics, aerospace, therapeutics, fintech and software services.<\/p>\n<p>Germany showed relative strength, leapfrogging the U.K. last quarter as the region\u2019s top venture market.<\/p>\n<p>Another bright spot: Startup M&amp;A in Europe also showed strength, totaling $7.2 billion across 172 exits in Q2.<\/p>\n<h2>Latin America rises on Mexico\u2019s strength<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/news.crunchbase.com\/venture\/mexico-leads-latam-funding-q2-2025-ai-fintech-data\/\">Venture funding in Latin America rose 13% quarter over quarter and 16% year over year<\/a>, led by a burst of investment in Mexico, which surpassed Brazil as the region\u2019s top destination for VC dollars for the first time since 2012.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Mexico\u2019s Q2 funding totals were led by digital bank <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crunchbase.com\/organization\/klar\">Klar<\/a>\u2019s $170 million raise, and $127 million for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crunchbase.com\/organization\/kavak\">Kavak<\/a>, which operates an online pre-owned car marketplace.<\/p>\n<p>Other notable deals in LatAm last quarter include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>$120 million for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crunchbase.com\/organization\/new-wave-7a3a\">New Wave<\/a>, a Rio de Janeiro, Brazil-based startup developing \u201csustainable and low-cost\u201d technologies for the mining-metallurgical sector;<\/li>\n<li>$48 million for Chilean fintech <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crunchbase.com\/organization\/toku-3dea\">Toku<\/a>; and<\/li>\n<li>$45 million for Mexico e-commerce aggregator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crunchbase.com\/organization\/merama\">Merama<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Cybersecurity, AI and fintech surge globally<\/h2>\n<p>Beyond geography, sector trends underscored where investor enthusiasm is returning.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/news.crunchbase.com\/cybersecurity\/privacy-venture-funding-surged-q2-2025-ai-cyera-data\/\">Global venture funding to cybersecurity<\/a> surged to $4.9 billion in Q2<\/strong>, pushing H1 to the highest half-year level in three years, according to Crunchbase data. Among the biggest deal recipients were: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crunchbase.com\/organization\/cyera?_gl=1*qkfjyk*_gcl_au*NTEzNDI1MTgwLjE3NTEyOTEyNjc.*_ga*MjAzODAwMzgwMi4xNzQzNDI5MzYx*_ga_97DKWJJNRK*czE3NTI0OTc3MTckbzYyMCRnMSR0MTc1MjQ5OTY4OSRqNjAkbDAkaDA.\">Cyera<\/a> (AI-enabled data security platform, $540 million), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crunchbase.com\/organization\/cato-networks\">Cato Networks<\/a> (cloud security provider, $359 million) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crunchbase.com\/organization\/chainguard\">Chainguard<\/a> (software supply chain security, $356 million).<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/news.crunchbase.com\/fintech\/investor-optimism-funding-rising-ai-ma-ipo-h1-2025-data\/\"><strong>Fintech posted modest gains,<\/strong><\/a><strong> with H1 2025 global venture funding up 5.3% year over year<\/strong> to $22 billion, a potential signal that investor confidence is returning after 2023\u2019s reset. A handful of high-profile IPOs in the first six months of the year \u2014 including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crunchbase.com\/organization\/circle-2\/\">Circle<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crunchbase.com\/organization\/chime-2\/\">Chime<\/a> \u2014 may signal a reopening of exit paths and reignite VC interest in the sector. One investor we spoke with, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crunchbase.com\/person\/camila-fernandes-84a4\">Camila Vieira<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crunchbase.com\/organization\/qed-investors\">QED Investors<\/a>, said \u201cthere\u2019s a real sense of momentum returning, particularly in B2B infrastructure, AI-native fintech and climate-aligned financial services.\u201d<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><strong>All in all, AI remains the consistent thread,<\/strong> appearing in nearly every top deal across sectors and regions.<\/p>\n<h2>Looking ahead: Momentum builds, but caution remains<\/h2>\n<p>With startup M&amp;A holding strong and the IPO markets inching open, the venture rebound shows signs of holding steady. But with the majority of the funding growth tied up in a single sector \u2014 AI \u2014 and dominated by a handful of large deals, the recovery also feels somewhat fragile.<\/p>\n<p>Consider that nearly a third of all venture capital investment in Q2 went to just 16 companies \u2014 many of them in the AI sector \u2014 that raised funding rounds of $500 million or more.
