Crypto exchange Gate.io has been accused of withholding evidence and delaying a police investigation into the theft of a user\u2019s $1.7 million worth of crypto.<\/p>\n

Gate.io\u2019s Chinese X account has denied the allegations put forward<\/a> by user \u201cJheioff,\u201d whose Gate account was drained on July 8.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Jheioff claims that, despite using phone verification, Google\u2019s two-step authenticator, and email verification, they weren\u2019t alerted to the attack.\u00a0<\/p>\n

They said, \u201cMy phone never received any SMS verification codes, and I\u2019ve never provided video footage, handheld ID photos, or login screen recordings to anyone.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jheioff filed a criminal case on July 17 but subsequently accused Gate of \u201cdeflecting and delaying\u201d and claims that, 10 days after filing the case, the exchange still hasn\u2019t submitted video facial data or risk control information.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Gate, on the other hand, called Jheioff\u2019s claims \u201cunfounded accusations,\u201d and instead says it has prioritised their case.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Jheioff says Gate is hindering crypto theft investigation<\/h2>\n

In an X post translated from Chinese, Jheioff said<\/a> that once the case was filed, they asked the exchange for every document required by police.<\/p>\n

They claim authorities then sent Gate the case filing decision, the IDs of two police officers, the judicial evidence request letter, and other related documents.<\/p>\n

However, Gate allegedly wanted a PDF version from Jheioff. When sent a compressed PDF, they told Jheioff that they would need to re-upload as a proper PDF file while citing virus risks.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Jheioff claims the company then suggested could be submitting false documents, and that the police officers may be imposters. As such, it then said it would require a video confirming their identities.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI made a special trip to the public security bureau to cooperate,\u201d Jheioff says, \u201cbut Gate then claimed they could only do voice verification at that time and couldn\u2019t do video.<\/p>\n

\u201cFinally, they claimed that \u2018the materials are incomplete\u2019 and \u2018some documents have expired,\u2019 but failed to provide a single list specifying the missing materials, expired documents, correction standards, and processing deadlines.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jheioff added, \u201cI\u2019m baffled \u2014 you guys have so many issues. I asked in advance to clarify the details of the summons; why didn\u2019t you mention any of this back then? Now you\u2019re using these trivial details to stall and shirk responsibility \u2014 it really comes in handy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gate claims Jheioff is the one delaying<\/h2>\n

Gate suggests that it\u2019s actually Jheioff doing most of the delaying.\u00a0<\/p>\n

On the day of the incident, the company claims that Jheioff was \u201cvery slow,\u201d and \u201cconsistently refused our assistance\u201d when it came to filing a case and providing legal resources to help.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It said that after Jheioff informed it of the filing on July 17, it took another five days for it to receive an inquiry letter. It also claimed that the July 22 letter was missing documents, had expired credentials, couldn\u2019t be verified, and lacked official contact information.<\/p>\n

Then, on July 24, Gate says the given official contact phone number \u201cwas a personal line, the email was a personal account, and there were inconsistencies between the case description and the incident details,\u201d and as such, it \u201cimmediately replied requesting a video call for verification and confirmation.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAs of July 27, three days have passed, and we still have not received a specific schedule for the video verification,\u201d Gate claims, adding that if Jheioff had cooperated, this step could\u2019ve been resolved within a day.\u00a0<\/p>\n

As for the PDF, it says it clearly stated that it needed to be in the PDF format, and that Jheioff sent a document compression package instead.<\/p>\n

Gate and Jheioff previously argued<\/a> over the details of the hack, with Jheioff denying that all the logged security changes in the run-up to the draining were their doing.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Indeed, Gate maintained<\/a> in its response to Jheioff today that the incident wasn\u2019t the result of leaked data, which Jheioff suggests caused the drain.<\/p>\n
