The most the company ever installed, at its absolute peak, was <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2026\/08\/20\/tesla-discontinues-solar-roof-panels-only\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">32<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, it\u2019s only installed<strong> <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2026\/08\/20\/tesla-discontinues-solar-roof-panels-only\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">3,000<\/a><strong> <\/strong>in total. For context, if the company had achieved Elon Musk\u2019s 1,000 per week goal, it should have installed around 345,000 solar roofs by now.<\/p>\n<p>There was no press release or regulatory filing that accompanied the shutdown. New York broke ground at RiverBend, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investigativepost.org\/2014\/09\/23\/solarcity-deal-rich-subsidy-package\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">committing<\/a> $750 million for a plant SolarCity would lease for just $1 a year.<\/li>\n<li><strong>October 2015:<\/strong> An amended state agreement <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investigativepost.org\/2016\/05\/13\/solarcity-slashes-buffalo-jobs-commitment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cut<\/a> SolarCity\u2019s direct manufacturing commitment in Buffalo from 1,460 jobs to 500.<\/li>\n<li><strong>July 31, 2016:<\/strong> Tesla <a href=\"https:\/\/ir.tesla.com\/_flysystem\/s3\/sec\/000119312516665620\/d200129d8k-gen_0.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">signed<\/a> a stock merger agreement worth roughly <strong>$2.6 billion<\/strong> for SolarCity. Musk and two of his cousins were controlling shareholders prior to the deal.\n<p>\u201cMusk knew SolarCity was going broke before merger with Tesla,\u201d a shareholder lawsuit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/business\/story\/2019-09-23\/solarcity-tesla-merger-shareholder-lawsuit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">alleged<\/a>. Also at that time, Musk had over $475 million in <strong>personal loans<\/strong> backed partially backed by SolarCity stock.<\/p><\/li>\n<li><strong>October 28, 2016:<\/strong> Musk <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/video\/2016\/oct\/29\/elon-musk-unveils-new-tesla-solar-roof-tiles-video\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">unveiled<\/a> four tiles at Universal Studios. Omitted from his presentation were certain <a href=\"https:\/\/courts.delaware.gov\/Opinions\/Download.aspx?id=332290\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">facts<\/a> that the tiles generated no electricity, were \u201cconceptual in nature,\u201d and built not for solar power generation but \u201cdemonstration of the aesthetics.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>November 17, 2016:<\/strong> Tesla shareholders <a href=\"https:\/\/ir.tesla.com\/_flysystem\/s3\/sec\/000119312516772291\/d297885d8k-gen_0.pdf\">appr<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/ir.tesla.com\/_flysystem\/s3\/sec\/000119312516772291\/d297885d8k-gen_0.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">o<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/ir.tesla.com\/_flysystem\/s3\/sec\/000119312516772291\/d297885d8k-gen_0.pdf\">ved<\/a> the SolarCity acquistion.<\/li>\n<li><strong>November 21, 2016:<\/strong> The merger <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sec.gov\/Archives\/edgar\/data\/1318605\/000119312517083740\/d535695dex992.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">closed<\/a>, making SolarCity a Tesla subsidiary and Solar Roof an official Tesla product.<\/li>\n<li><strong>December 27, 2016:<\/strong> Panasonic <a href=\"https:\/\/news.panasonic.com\/global\/press\/en161227-6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">finalized<\/a> an agreement to make photovoltaic cells at its Buffalo, New York plant. In an obvious quid pro quo, Tesla committed to \u201ca long-term purchase commitment from Panasonic.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>May 10, 2017:<\/strong> Tesla opened orders for SolarCity at $21.85 per square foot of total roof area, <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2017\/05\/10\/tesla-solar-roof-tiles-price-warranty\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">promising<\/a> a lifetime warranty.<\/li>\n<li><strong>May 25, 2017:<\/strong> Two weeks later, an RBC analyst <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2017\/05\/25\/tesla-solar-roof-tiles-sold-out-2018\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">noted<\/a> Solar Roof orders as sold out through 2018.<\/li>\n<li><strong>August 2, 2017:<\/strong> Tesla <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sec.gov\/Archives\/edgar\/data\/1318605\/000156459017014920\/tsla-ex991_90.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">disclosed<\/a> that Tesla employees received the first Solar Roof installations.<\/li>\n<li><strong>January 9, 2018:<\/strong> Tesla <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/technology\/tesla-says-solar-roof-production-has-started-in-buffalo-idUSKBN1EY2B9\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a> <em>Reuters<\/em> that its Buffalo, NY facility had begun producing Solar Roof tiles as of December 2017.<\/li>\n<li><strong>June 12, 2018:<\/strong> In a restructuring that cut about 9% of staff, Musk <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2018\/06\/12\/tesla-ditches-home-depot-as-sales-partner-for-home-solar-products.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ended<\/a> Tesla\u2019s Home Depot partnership for SolarCity sales.<\/li>\n<li><strong>August 8, 2018:<\/strong> A <em>Reuters<\/em> investigation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/technology\/inside-teslas-troubled-new-york-solar-factory-idUSKBN1KT0DU\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">found<\/a> Buffalo producing only one of the four tile styles that Musk demonstrated in 2016.<\/li>\n<li><strong>September 24, 2018:<\/strong> A <em>CNBC<\/em> investigation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2018\/09\/24\/tesla-solar-roof-tiles-where-are-they.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">found<\/a> only 12 Solar Roofs connected in California as of May 2018, far below Musk\u2019s estimate of several hundred.<\/li>\n<li><strong>October 25, 2019:<\/strong> Tesla launched Solar Roof V3, <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2019\/10\/25\/tesla-solarglass-solar-roof-v3-price\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">quoting<\/a> roughly $33,950 for a 2,000 square foot roof.
