I assumed it was one of the usual AirPods failure modes where my phone or personal laptop might be holding onto the connection from the day before.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I checked my iPhone \u2014 no connection.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Next troubleshooting step: Put them back in the case. Count to five. Open the case. Hope they connect.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Worse. I get the dreaded half-screen setup sheet that says something like \u201cThese aren\u2019t your AirPods\u201d asking if I want to connect them. This happens a few times a year. They\u2019ll go missing from my Apple account, I\u2019ll re-pair, and then they mostly work for the next six months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fine, start the setup process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Yes, I want to enable Announce Calls.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>No, I don\u2019t want to enable Announce Notifications.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Yes, I want to use Personalized Volume.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Yes, I want to enable head gestures to answer and decline phone calls.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>No, I don\u2019t want to turn on Conversational Awareness.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>No, I don\u2019t want to take a hearing test.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>No, I don\u2019t want to try a demo of live translation.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And then\u2026<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Get 3 months of free music with your AirPods Pro<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An advertisement. In the setup wizard. After a product failure. While I\u2019m stressed and late for a work meeting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And Apple couldn\u2019t even be bothered to make the advertisement properly fit on screen. On their latest flagship iPhone.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.tyler.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/fucking-stupid-airpods.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3009\"\/><\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My wife switched to a pair of <a href=\"https:\/\/electronics.sony.com\/audio\/headphones\/all-headphones\/p\/wfls910n-g\">Sony earbuds<\/a> last year after swearing off AirPods for frequently failing to charge. She\u2019s enjoyed them. So instead of accepting Apple\u2019s generous three free months of Apple Music, I put that money to better use and bought a pair of <a href=\"https:\/\/electronics.sony.com\/audio\/headphones\/truly-wireless-earbuds\/p\/wf1000xm5-b\">Sony WF-1000XM5<\/a> (what a name) on my lunch break.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I no longer care if AirPods are the better product for my needs. They\u2019re not the experience I want.
